THE OTHER SIDE

about

There are a lot of stories, movies, songs, and tales about addicts. Most of which focus on the pain, the collateral damage, the hardships on their communities and families, and generally just a lot of negativity.

I am somebody who has loved many addicts in my life. I have had deep friendships, longterm relationships, etc. It has been somewhat of a constant in a lot of ways. I continue to be friends with many.
I have also lost a few friends to substance abuse along the way.

I wrote this song for one of those friends, and there are parts of it I feel like she actually wrote.
She was an enigmatic, lovable, and a talented artist.
I wanted to remember her in that way- and remind the listener that two things can be very true; somebody can be deeply hurting and self-medicating, while also bring color to the world in their own unique way. There is a depth to people who struggle in this way -if you have the patience to love them and see beyond the hurting, that is absolutely beautiful.

lyrics

The moon was her sun
never met the light of day
Posted up in her boudoir
til evening

Porcelain and ink
A circle made of sand
We said the prayer
And then I took her hands

We said what’s it like on the other side?

Everyone
Was immediately taken
By her mystery and her melancholy
Charms

Stacking her pills
At the dirty kitchen table
Little armies
Pyramids of baby blue

She said what’s it like on the other side

Taking a day
To read up on psychedelia
Skipping class cuz
Boston winters
Last til may

The sweater she wore
Hanging on her like a sculpture
Draping marble
on a cactus flower frame

She said
Learn that Otis Redding song
The one about his love
Wrap me up in all his colors
As the smoke grazes our lungs
I wonder what the angels sing
I bet it’s rock and roll
I wanna know

The week you left
You asked me if
We’d go and see some jazz
It’d been a while
And I was so excited for our plans
I was down in Texas on the road
Singing my songs
The morning I got back
I got the call
That you were gone

I saw your mother staying strong
For everyone in line
saw your lover and your father
As I wiped my burning eyes

She said
Learn that Otis Redding song
The one about his love
Wrap me up in all his colors
As the smoke grazes our lungs
I never learned her one request
I thought I’d have more time

I’ll sing it for you
On the other side
